Beta-cateninbelongstogetherwithalpha-andgamma-catenintothecateninfamily.Cateninsmediatescell-celladhesionbyinteractionwithcadherins.Beta-cateninishighlyhomologoustogamma-catenin(plakoglobin)althoughitsfunctiondiffersfromthatofplakoglobin.WhereasplakoglobinhasbeenfoundtosuppresstumOrigenicity,beta-cateninpotentiateshyperproliferationandtumorformation.Inthenucleusbeta-cateninitcomplexeswithtranscriptionfactorsandthusregulatestheexpressionofspecificgenes.Byitsdualrole,i.e.astructuralroleincell-celljunctionsandaregulatoryroleinthenucleus,beta-catenincantransducechangesincelladhesionandjunctionformationtocontroltransmembranesignallingandgeneexpression.
