CD55,alsodesignateddecayacceleratingfactor(DAF),isa60-70kDaglycosyl-phosphatidylinositol(GPI)anchoredprotein.CD55isamemberofthefamilyofproteinsthatprotecthosttissuefromdamagebyautologouscomplement.CD55wasfirstrecognizedasaspeciesrestrictingfactoroperatingatthelevelofC3activation.ItbindsC3bandC4btoinhibitformationandhalf-lifeoftheC3convertases.CD55expressionincreasesuponTcellactivationandinthepresenceofphorbolestersantibodiestoCD55(e.g.monoclonalantibodyD17)aremitogenic.CD55isbroadlydistributedamongcellsincontactwithserum,includingbothhaematopoieticandnon-haematopoieticcells.AlthoughCD55doesnothaveanessentialroleincontrollinghemolysisoferythrocytes,ithasanimportantroleinregulationofthedepositionofC3onnucleatedcells.
