Monoclonalantibody2952reactswithaneo-epitopeonC5a(des-Arg)thatisformeduponcleavageofC5intoC5aandC5b.C5isinvolvedintheactivationofthelythicpathwaywithinthecomplementsystemwhichisanimportantfactorininnateimmunity.Thecomplementpathwayscanbedividedintheactivationpathwaysandlyticpathway.TheactivationpathwaysleadviaC3tothecleavageofthefifthcomplementcomponentC5.C5ainducessmoothmusclecontraction,increasesvascularpermeABIlity,causesdegranulationofmastcellsandbasophils,andreleaseoflysosomalenzymes.InadditionC5astimulatesthedirectedmigrationofneutrophils,eosinophils,basophilsandmonocytes.Recentstudiesindicatethemodulationoftheacute-phaseresponseinliverandanoverallimmuneresponsebyinducingsynthesisofcytokinessuchasTNF-alphaIL-1beta,IL-6andIL-8.
