MannoseBindingLectin(MBL)alsocalledmannose-ormannan-bindingprotein(MBP)isamemberofthegroupofcollectins.MBLisanoligomericlectinthatrecognizescarbohydratesasmannoseandN-acetylglucosamineonpathogens.MBLcontainsacysteinerich,acollagenlikeandacarbohydraterecognitiondomain.ItformsacomplexwithC1r/C1slikeserineproteasesdesignatedMASPsthatproteolyticallycleaveC4,C2andC3.MBLisabletoactivatethecomplementpathwayindependentoftheclassicalandalternativecomplementactivationpathways.TheMBL-MASPpathway(betterknownasthelectinpathway)isantibodyandC1q-independent.MBLexhibitscomplement-dependentantibacterialactivityandactsdirectlyasanopsonicandthereforeplaysanimportantroleininnateimmunity.MBLissynthesizedbyhepatocytesandhasbeenisolatedfromtheliverorserumofvariousvertebratespecies.
