Themonoclonalantibody55recognizeslipoteichoicacid(LTA).LTA,aglycerolphosphatesurfacepolymer,isacomponentoftheenvelopeofGram-positivebacteria.LTAisanchoredviaitsglycolipidstothemembraneandcarriesapolysaccharidechainextendingintothepeptidoglycanlayerofthecellwall.LTAisreleasedspontaneouslyintotheculturemediumduringgrowthofgram-positivebacteria.LTAfunctionsasanimmuneactivatorwithcharacteristicsverysimilartolipopolysaccharide(LPS)fromGram-negativebacteria.LTAbindstoCD14andtriggersactivationpredominantlyviaToll-likereceptor2.AlthoughLTAisinternalizedandtrafficstotheGolgi,thecellularactivationinresponsetoLTAoccursatthecellsurface.
