Lactoferrinisanapproximately80kDaglycoproteinwhichwasfirstisolatedfrommilkandfoundinepitheliaandmostbodyfluidsandsecretions.Lactoferrinissecretedinplasmabyneutrophils.Itsplasmaconcentrationrepresentsapositiverelationtothetotalpoolofneutrophilsandtherateofneutrophilturnover.Ininflammationlactoferrinisreleasedfromsecondarygranulesofneutrophilicleukocytesintotheextracellularmedium.Thereforetheextracellularlactoferrinconcentrationcanbeusedasanindexforneutrophilactivation.
Lactoferrinisabletostronglybindtoironandconsideredtohaveantibacterialproperties.HumanlactoferrinbindstobacterialproductsthroughitshighlypositivelychargedNterminusandkillsvariousbacteriamostprobablybyinducingintracellularchangesinthesebacteriawithoutaffectingthemembranepermeABIlity.Lactoferrinalsoplaysaroleinsignaltransduction,immunomodulationandhasantiadhesive,anticancer,antiviralactivity.
