C5isinvolvedintheactivationofthelythicpathwaywithinthecomplementsystemwhichisanimportantfactorininnateimmunity.Thecomplementpathwayscanbedividedintheactivationpathwaysandlyticpathway.TheactivationpathwaysleadviaC3tothecleavageofthefifthcomplementcomponentC5intoC5aandC5b.C5ainducessmoothmusclecontraction,increasesvascularpermeABIlity,causesdegranulationofmastcellsandbasophils,andreleaseoflysosomalenzymes.InadditionC5astimulatesthedirectedmigrationofneutrophils,eosinophils,basophilsandmonocytes.Studiesindicatethemodulationoftheacute-phaseresponseinliverandanoverallimmuneresponsebyinducingsynthesisofcytokinessuchasTNF-alpha,IL-1beta,IL-6andIL-8.C5binitiatestheassemblyofthemembraneattackcomplex(MAC)thatmediatescytolysis.
