ThemonoclonalantibodyER-MP21recognizesCD71,thetransferrinreceptor1.CD71isa200kDaglycoproteincomposedoftwoidentical,disulfide-linkedchains.Eachchainiscapableofbindingtransferrin,aniron-transportmolecule.Bindingoftransferrintoitsreceptorfollowedbyendocytosisofthereceptor-ligandcomplexisamajorcellulariron-uptakemechanism.Ironuptakebytheproliferatingcellisessentialfortheiron-containingenzymeribonucleotidereductaseinvolvedwithDNAsynthesis.CD71isnotonlyexpressedbycyclingcells,butalsobycellsthatrequireironforotheriron-dependentproteins,suchastheenzymeperoxidaseinmonocytes.Rapidlyproliferatingcells,asinmalignancy,generallyexpressCD71abundantly.FurThermore,CD71hasbeendescribedasaMarkerofimmature,proliferatingTcells.
