MannoseBindingLectin(MBL),alsocalledmannosebindingprotein(MBP),isacalciumdependentoligomericproteinthatbelongstothecollectinfamilyofproteins.Itcontainsacollagen-likedomainandacarbohydraterecognitiondomainenablingMBLtorecognizecarbohydrates(suchasmannoseandN-acetylglucosamine)onpathogens.MBLisabletoactivatethecomplementpathwayindependentoftheclassicalandalternativecomplementactivationpathways,byusingattachedmannosebindinglectin-associatedserineproteases(MASP-2)inanantibody-andC1q-independentmanner.MASP-2permitscleavageofC4andC2toformaC3convertase.Onceithasbound,MBLexhibitscomplement-dependentantibacterialactivitiessuchasmicrobialopsonizationand/ormicrobiallysisviamembraneattackcomplexesandthereforeplaysanimportantroleininnateimmunity.
